even though i love to travel, i hate to fly. a few years ago, i decided i would *try* and avoid connecting flights where possible. like you, i find it hard to say no to the cost savings of connecting flights, but now I evaluate the following factors before booking flights:
- the cost of the flights (connecting vs direct)
- whether the flight(s) are within the global alliance where I collect points
- flight schedule (departure and arrival timing)

Hi Kathleen, good to see you here!

This has been my first nightmarish situation as well, but it was a biggie!

I met a couple of people on my recent trip to Acapulco who live in Mexico city who absolutely love that city. They convinced me that I must visit too, so I hope to one day. I hope you really enjoy your stay!

Going to Japan? Sounds awesome. That's on my list too. Okay, everywhere is on my list:) Have fun!

I just never have the option to take direct flights because I always travel halfway across the darn world! I ALWAYS pick the cheapest ticket, though. I've never had a problem with delays and that's pretty lucky, considering that I've been flying since I was a baby! I don't mind layovers so much, especially if it means I get to stay at a hotel and see a new place. :) We have a crazy 2 day layover in Mexico City next month on the way to Japan but I'm so excited for it!

Southwest just came to Minneapolis recently, and I'm looking forward to giving them a try. We certainly needed something once Northwest "merged" (ha) with Delta and is of no use to me anymore. I like Southwest's website navigation. Sad, I know:)

Where I live, the closest airport (GSP) almost never gives direct flights. The airport is too small. We are stuck usually connecting through Atlanta or Charlotte.

However, sometimes the price of flying out of one of the bigger cities is so much lower, it is worth it to drive there.

I am planning my honeymoon in October. Direct flights out of Charlotte are about $300 per person less than flying out of GSP and connecting in Charlotte. It is only about 1.5 hours drive to Charlotte. This one is a no brainer to me!

I try to reduce the number of connections always, but price does have to play an important factor in my planning. As well as being flexible enough to drive to a larger airport to get a significant savings.

Southwest is coming to GSP sometime soon. Can't wait for that. Maybe we will finally have a decent low cost carrier.
